Essay aims to reconstruct the thought of Carlo Cattaneo on the subject of anthropology. From the first hints in the studies of linguistics, up to the writings of maturity, it will try to delineate the Cattaneo’s reflection on the role of innate elements - and especially biological ones - in the genesis of individual and collective thought, as well as in the determination of the will. This reflection will be placed in the wider system of the Lombard thinker, pointing out the themes of continuity with his convictions of philosophy of history, sociology and political theory. The marginal role of innate factors in his idea of human thought will emerge, especially with reference to his late years works, as well as the contextual enrichment of his vision of the genesis of action.
