The contribution develops a reflection on the ability of Italian metroregions, and Metropolitan cities namely, to be efficient in terms of competitiveness and reaction to the global economic crisis. To do this, a dynamic-cumulative shift-share analysis of the employment levels of the Italian urban system in the pre- and post-crisis period is carried out. Compared to the usual techniques of comparative analysis, this method allows to detect the dynamics of development of the territories and to decompose the constituent components of the competitive advantage, both internal (for example due to the composition of the regional economy) and external (the Nation-state effect). Therefore, in the perspective of the regional sciences it offers a more precise assessment of the local territorial potential.
