The article investigates the living and working conditions of the workforce employed in the leather district of the Valle del Chiampo, characterized by a strong segmentation of me- dium-small enterprises that cooperate and compete within the leather supply chain, and by a high utilization of immigrant labor. After a brief discussion on the competitive dynamics the district faces in the current phase, the article analyzes the working conditions of the em- ployees in the Venetian tanneries, the fragmentation of the workforce, the difficulties in unionization, the unequal distribution of workplace hazards, and the discriminatory dyna- mics that operate within and outside the sphere of social production. The article examines the challenges that the workforce faces in triggering mechanisms of solidarity and collecti- ve mobilization due to the profound fragmentation and stratification of labor force.
