Much of the research on motivation toward volunteerism has focused on the motivational sources of volunteers, such as altruistic values, personal development, socialization, etc.; less attention has been paid to the degree of autonomy in volunteers’ motivation. Referring to the Self Determination Theory, Millette and Gagnè (2008) created the Volunteer Motivation Scale in order to evaluate this. A self-report instrument which aims to measure the intensity of volunteers autonomous versus controlled motivation is lacking in Italian. This paper presents the former results from the first administration of the Italian translation of Millette and Gagnè’s scale to 247 volunteers.
