The Birth of the Opera Nazionale Balilla - The aim of the article is to reconstruct the complex process which led, between 1925 and 1927, to the birth of this original creation of the Italian fascist regime. Moreover, thanks to the newly available documents from the Vatican Secret Archives, the author highlights a further aspect of the genesis of the Onb: the Holy See’s fears and its attempts to influence the definition of the nature of the new organization in order to safeguard the role of Azione cattolica italiana in the education of the youth.
