Vulnerability model has modified our vision of many psychiatric disorders; these are now explained as the result of complex interaction between gene and environment, not as a product of only nature or culture. Recently, many researches of behavioural genetics illustrate that it is wrong to look upon the risky genes only as a handicap. Genetic sensibility to negative experiences, identified thanks to vulnerability model, is only the dark side of a more general phenomenon: a larger genetic sensibility to all experiences. This hypothesis, that we call the orchid theory, will be explained in detail. Later, potential implications for psychotherapy and for ericksonian model of hypnotic treatment for psychiatric disorders will be considered.
