The lack of opportunities, employment, income and social services is a primary source of urban poverty. On the other hand, social sciences are still not able to devise effective interpretations and policies to reduce and defeat poverty. In this respect, it is necessary to renew the imaginary of researchers, policy makers and planners in order to better understand the relationship existing among environmental and familiar factors, as well as genetic ones, that make poverty chronicization and social exclusion stronger. The knowledge coming from other disciplines can be helpful in such a framework.
