The paper explores whether, in the passage to the knowledge society, the conditions exist whereby urban and regional planning can regain social legitimation: Such conditions will rest on a convergence between the ethical requirements that are inherent in any regulatory intervention, and the complex set of interests stemming from the present pattern of development. Considering the specific local character of the dialogical processes of knowledge formation, as well as their generative potential as regards creativeness and innovativeness, the paper concludes that there is indeed some room for such a convergence to form.
