The most recent epidemiological data on HIV infection confirm the increasing number of serodiscordant couples. From a psychosociological point of view, many factors can destabilize or break the couple’s balance: sexual sphere difficulties, intimacy worries, confusion, fear, feelings of guilt, inadequacy, exclusion, communication problems or failures. These obstacles can lead the couple to ask a psychological support, above all when the infection is discovered or uncovered, to develop useful relational strategies. The aim of this contribution is to review the literature to analyze the psychosexological aspects in the HIV-discordant couples and the role that couple counselling may have as an HIV prevention strategy and as a tool to enhance relational and psychological wellbeing.

Keywords: HIV, HIV-discordant couples, psychosexological counselling, integrative approach, risky sexual practices, sexual health.
