Le crisi di questo inizio secolo hanno messo in evidenza il riacutizzarsi di problematiche sociali e territoriali antiche, che hanno assunto nuovo rilievo nelle città in forte trasformazione per gli effetti della globalizzazione e dei nuovi assetti del mercato del lavoro. Si ripropone così il tema del vivere nelle periferie: il volume permette di esaminare le politiche adottate e da adottare in questi territori e il ruolo che le forze sociali e le reti associative hanno svolto e possono esercitare per individuare risposte adeguate e durature a problemi complessi.

This volume describes the ideational effort required to design and implement a training-course model for "Experts in proximity violence". The Pilot project design has envisaged a framework where the concepts referring to broad reflections on the topic have be related to the professional skills to be trained. Proximity violence concerns multiple forms of gender-based violence which conceal, in turn, more subtle, intimate and viscous forms of dependence. The course was based on modules and availed itself of a "mixed" methodology, where theoretical lectures were interwoven with experiential workshops.

By exploring the ongoing evolution of some strategic areas and the experiences of selected architects – Atelier Deshaus, Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects and Original Design Studio –, the book analyses the fields, the reasons and the modalities of the transformations in contemporary Shangai, and outlines the raise of a counter-trend emerging from the most recent interventions on both existing and new buildings, which are experimenting with new relationships with the local history, cultural heritage and urban identity.
