An attempt is being made in contemporary moral philosophy and in theological reflection itself to draw suggestions from ecology capable of opening up new ethical perspectives. The theme of human responsibility for the environment emerged both within a secular ethics - starting from the reflections of Hans Jonas - and religious - the papal encyclical Laudato Si’ is a significant testimony of this. Today the challenge we are facing is the search for a synthesis that knows how to combine the innovative demands expressed by ecological thinking with the humanistic legacy in the direction of an ecological humanism capable of integrating the principles of human ethics with the new duties to nature and other species.

Keywords: Ecology, humanism, environmental ethics, anthropocentrism, value, religious and secular ethics
