The author weighs the pros and cons of the Italian reform of public management, in the current perspective of a comprehensive renewal of the public administration. Starting from the assumption of the radical difference among public and private organizations, he resumes the starting point of the relation between politicians and public managers and then analyses the philosophy and the guidelines of the recent reforms, to state, in the conclusions, chances and the risks that it brings.
