School has always been seen as a fundamental institution for the development of citizens, and it is acknowledged as having a predominating role in moulding individuals and social groups in terms of identity, rules, and values. A great many authors bear grateful witness to the importance of school life, which proves a successful process of identification. When, on the other hand, this feeling of gratitude is really one of envy and we know what a heavy burden gratitude can be this is revealed indistinctly, and is not acknowledged by the envious person, but is justified in other ways, through varied reasoning, and, in any case, is expressed on a group level. The group itself obviously functions as a basic reference point. Key words: school, self-objects, identification.
