The gospel truths of Italian media bias (By Chris Hanretty) - ABSTRACT: The debate in Italy about the partisan bias of the several television news bulletins has generated a series of widely-held and testable propositions about the direction of each network’s bias and the effect of government influence over public broadcaster Rai. The author demonstrates that although the conventional wisdom about the direction of each network’s bias is correct, government influence secured through changes in Rai’s board did not substantially alter these patterns. Political controversy over nominations to posts in Rai may therefore reflect purely partisan concerns over the distribution of political spoils rather than concern about the impact of such nominations on the quality of impartiality of television news.
