The present research investigates the relationship of cognitive styles to spatial and imagery abilities, and also explores gender differences, using a sample of 86 students attending high-school in Padua (Italy). Cognitive style was assessed using three questionnaires: Verbalizer-Visualizer (Richardson, 1977), Object- Spatial Imagery (Blajenkova, Kozhevnikov & Motes, 2006a), and Cognitive Style (Kozhevnikov, Kosslyn & Shephard, 2005). Spatial and imagery abilities were measured using the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (Marks, 1973) and the Mental Rotation Test (Vandenberg & Kuse, 1978). Two different types of visualizer cognitive style were identified, involving distinct informationprocessing approaches: spatial visualizers, who prefer schematic images of the spatial relations between objects and perform well on spatial ability tasks; and object visualizers, who score higher than spatial visualizers on measures of vividness of mental images. Gender differences are also reported, with males outperforming females for several spatial scores.
