The research presented aims to investigate, through the detailed analysis of statistical indicators, the characteristics, the composition and the incidence of parttime work in different european countries. The goal is to study the consequences of part-time especially on female population, highlighting development opportunities and the importance for work-life balance policies and to analyse other elements of precariousness characterizing it. The paper crosses the characteristics of workers with the motivations which led them to work part-time; with a focus on sectors and professional levels, it tries also to understand critical issues related to this contract. The results show that part-time, far from being the main instrument to promote greater reconciliation of family and work, is often a forced "choice" in the absence of alternatives and assumes increasingly the traits of marginality.

Keywords: Part-time, female employment, work-life balance, gender inequalities, precarious work, unwillingness
