The youths spend part of their daily time exploring the virtual space offered by new technologies, particularly by the way of computer they use for study or for fun. This longitudinal research carried out with 189 adolescents of both genders, aged on average 16 yrs and attending high school is aimed at: 1) describing the daily time the adolescents spend using the computer for study and for fun, and the relations among these two behaviours and gender, age and type of school; 2) investigating in both genders the relations among the time spent for using the computer for study and for fun and: a) sense of alienation and positive self-perception; b) satisfaction for school-experience and school self-efficacy; c) social and regulatory self-efficacy; d) popularity in school context. The results (frequencies, correlations, means, ANOVA, hierarchical regression) showed that the daily use of computer for study and for fun is more common among boys and students of technical and vocational schools. Besides, both computer activities, for study and for fun, are strongly related between each other. Among boys we found some relationships between lower popularity and higher use of computer for study, and between lower positive self-perception and higher use of computer for fun; among girls we found that lower satisfaction for school-experience is associated to the use of computer for study.
