The denial of dependence and interdependence are frequent features of analytic endings, in both classical literature and many actual analyses. This depends mostly on the dominant cultural context of the U.S.: a traditional masculine subject position that grounds its autonomy in a denial of embeddedness in a relationship, a form of defensive autonomy that the Author connects to "maternal resistance". By means of a particularly fitting clinical case - the development of self-esteem and access to an affective and romantic relationship in a gay male - she illuminates all the intricacies that, in the ending of the analysis, obstruct the working through of these themes and are crucial for the achievement of a true autonomy.

Keywords: Analytic endings, dependence, interdependence, relationship, autonomy
