The archive of the Tuscany CLN (CTLN) displays a fairly broad spectrum of tasks carried out by the supreme political organ of the Tuscan Resistance, especially as regards the self-government of Florence in the period spanning from the liberation of this city (August-September 1944) up to the ceasing of its activity (March 1946). This essay examines in particular the complex problems of legality and equity involved in the troubled transition from a state of civil war toward democratic normality. Despite divergences with the Prefect, the CTLN played a significant role of mediation in the field of public order and purge of public bureaucracy (quite a few were the episodes of social conflict, with demonstrations of partisans, ex-servicemen, jobless people and so on) as well as between the central apparatus and the peripheral branches of the CLN organization.
