This opening essay clarifies the methodological approach that has been adopted in this issue of the journal. Our analysis strives to go beyond a unidimensional and microlocal comprehension of the political and social phenomena and processes at stake. In this introduction, we state how and why this issue highlights the spatial (and specifically urban) dimension of different forms of political mobilization and opposition, as well as the relevance of the political, economic, social, and symbolical conflicts that revolve around the form of the city (and specifically of its public spaces) and its meanings. The events of the last three years are thus framed in a long-term perspective of narratives, processes, conflicts, languages, and practices of political inclusion and exclusion.
