Margherita Trotti Bentivoglio (1810-1867), better known as Margherita Provana di Collegno, was a noblewoman who delt with some of the most famous risorgimental patriots, including her sister Costanza Arconati (1800-1871) and her husband Giacinto Provana di Collegno (1794-1856). The article examines one of her early journals, written when the young woman was in Belgium with her sister Costanza, in 1835. After a brief description of the girl's family and education, the Author focuses on the manuscript's contents: the journal can be considered a model of self-analysis, in which Margherita described her feelings towards life and love, following a stream of consciousness typical of the journal writing's style. The melancholy state of mind felt through the pages can be read as an example of "romantic self", just as the closeness to the natural surrounding and the influence of some literature Authors esteemed by the Romantic movement, such as William Shakespeare or Walter Scott.
