Looks into the process by which, in the age of peacekeeping and international security operations, a political and cultural meaning is given to military deaths occurring during missions abroad. The focus is on the commemoration of Italian military casualties in Afghanistan from 2001 onwards. Has the «human rights and peace» rhetoric been enough in order to legitimize their deaths or have more nation-oriented arguments been put forward in public debate?
