The recent increase of the number of elders and particularly very old elders showed that public and private services are insufficient to meet their different needs and that is necessary to promote intergenerational solidarity between grandparents, their children and their adult grandchildren. However so far research on intergenerational solidarity has explored the relationship between the elderly and their children, and much more rarely with teenage grandchildren or young adults, and almost no studies included grandparents, parents and grandchildren.
Aims and methodology: the research involved 140 triads composed of grandfather (average age 80 years), parent (average age 52 years) and grandson (average age 24 years). Following the theories of intergenerational solidarity Silverstein, Bengston e Laron (1997), we examined which types of intergenerational support (contact, instrumental and socio-emotive) were more present and explored the types of potential intergenerational conflicts. We also ascertained the opinions of members of the triad on the likely increase of generational clashes.
