The aim of this essay is to support the hypothesis that the invention of the Costa Smeralda, a special tourist settlement founded in Sardinia at the beginning of the Sixties, contributed to a wider process of planetary economic and territorial reorganization determined by the transition from an industrial to a consumer economy, with the result that the Gallura region, devoid of any city in the classical sense of the word, became part of an original urban horizon.
Keywords: Territory, holidays city, simulacrum, planetary urbanisation, consumer economy
