This paper intends to locate the circularity of family functions in parent-child relations. Starting from the position of a parent as a never isolated but inevitably relating person, that is established by a series of relationships, we define a family as a place of organization and development of subjects. This idea of family allows us to provide treatment while considering both individual and group dimensions and the circularity of relations between them. A family is a peculiar type of group because it contains different generations and is the primary place of development of individuals. Family therapy aims at showing how much we use the other to preserve our own rigidity. Rigidity is in the service of maintaining a link, as illustrated by a clinical vignette.
