As international crises and conflicts reshape migration flows to Europe, examining how migrations are represented in the media is of crucial importance to understand how security risks are understood, evaluated and connected to each other in the public discourse. The author contributes to this effort by analysing the framing of migration risks in the Italian press over a two-year period during and following the international military intervention in Libya in 2011. Albeit frames dealing with different aspects of the security-migration binomial coexist in the media, automated content analysis of five national papers shows the prevalence of a coverage framing migration as a risk for destination societies. The discursive em-phasis on security issues such as terrorism, criminality and public order, contributes to define migration as a threat, and to reaffirm the dominance of a we-centric and securitarian discourse on migration.
