By analyzing the socio-political process that led to the approval of Law 164/1982 - Rules Concerning the Rectification of Sex-Attribution - this article highlights the normalization process of (trans)gendered bodies and sexuality in Italy, hidden behind the apparent recognition of the right to gender self-determination. In particular, the article examines the Parliamentary debate that eventually led to the introduction of a new Law, in a context - the 1970s and 1980s - characterized by the presence of strong sexual liberation and civil rights movements, namely the feminist and the gay movements. The aim of the paper is to show that the Law was the the result of a trade-off between the subjects concerned (in particular the Italian Transsexual Movement, Mit) and the parties which promoted it - in particular the Radical Party and the Italian Communist Party - and between these parties and the Christian Democracy Party.
