Traumatic memories and the body: A study on child maltreatment, interoceptive aware-ness, and somatic symptoms. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship among child maltreatment, alterations in interoceptive awareness, and somatic symptoms. 370 adult participants (54% females) completed a battery of self-report measures for the assessment of childhood trauma, interoceptive awareness, and somatic symptoms. Significant associations were observed between the investigated variables. A cluster analysis identified three clusters of participants who reported different types and number of childhood traumatic experiences. The cluster including the participants who were exposed to multiple childhood adversities showed higher impairments in interoceptive awareness and higher levels of somatic symptoms. Traumatic experiences in the attachment relationships can have a negative and lasting impact on interoceptive awareness and psychosomatic inte-gration.

Keywords: Child maltreatment, interoceptive awareness, somatic symptoms, psychosomatics, developmental psychopathology.
