On June the 27th 2007 the "Museum for the Memory of Ustica" opened in Bologna as a "substitute" place of memory, set in the city of departure of the DC-9 Itavia that crashed to sea on June the 27th 1980 nearby Ustica island. The key feature of the museum is the wreck of the aircraft, reassembled thanks to a submarine recovery and to be evaluated during a long and complex trial. Information is not the key to interpretation, but emotion, mediated by art: Christian Boltanski, a french artist, created an installation of sound and light around the wreck and the victims personal belongings, that had been retreived in the depth of the sea. After determining the cause of the massacre, while waiting for the identification of its responsibles, the museum is now a useful device to arouse and maintain attention, by activating parallel archival projects and historiographical studies.
