During the second half of the 19th century, science teaching at the Medical Faculty develops around two themes: the multiple reforms of the University system and the application of principles of modern sanitary assistance inside the regional territory. Both topics, from one side amplify the training offer of scholars and leading teachers, by another trigger the reduction of the number of students. From this standpoint, the most important legacy of modern "school of medicine" in the University has been the increase of disciplinary knowledge and the launch of a more rational network of territorial medical assistance.
