This Mondi Migranti dossier aims to attract attention towards religious phenome-na associated with migrations, starting with the affirmation of the extent to which they are important for - and influence - integration processes in host societies. The reflection is based on the assertion that religion is never just religion: it involves various implications interweaving with the subjective dimension and that of collec-tive life. Above all, on the subjective level religious practice represents an element of personal consistency. The subjective dimension is associated with the cultural: in religious practice, the immigrant find out symbols, rituals, devotions and famil-iar words which are a reminders of the past, keep his/her - often troubled - life afloat in the present and induce hope for the future. A further crucial function de-rives from the sense of solidarity of religious communities in emigration: the pro-motion of forms of reciprocal assistance and supporting brethren in difficulty. Despite their scarcity of means, immigrant communities carry out various informal welfare activities, doing their best to respond to participants’ needs. .
