The ‘Revolutionary Festivals’, a system of celebrations which took place in the last decade of the xviii century, transformed the city of Paris into a living utopia: these manifestations turned the ideals of the French Revolution into something immediate and tangible for everyone, involving the people in the common dream of a new virtuous republic. This contribution aims to highlight how the physical transformation of the streets, despite it ended up creating a mere fictional and ephemeral scenario with no long-term effect on the actual living condition of people, became a device of consensus building and thus of power legitimation. It will be analyzed the role played by the ‘virtual’ organization of the urban space in shaping the social imagination, revealing at the same time the tools adopted by the intellectuals in charge of designing the ceremonies.
