The essay illustrates Andreotti’s ideas on European integration and some aspects of his political commitment to promote the enlargement of the Communities to Greece, Portugal and Spain after the end of the dictatorships in these countries in the Seventies. The Italian statesman, following De Gasperi’s teaching, worked to maintain them in the Atlantic Alliance and to integrate them into the Communities, aiming to stabilize their recently acquired democracies, to strengthen the Atlantic defensive system in the Mediterranean and to relaunch the perspective of a European Union, which he believed was necessary and inevitable.
