The author sets out to study the smuggling of arms in Marseille during the French Third Republic. On one hand, the essay analyses the legislation, which wavered between complete liberalization and strict control, dividing the Republican period into three distinct chronological phases; on the other hand, the author outlines how the traffic was organized, depending on the market to which it was directed, either as a local trade - destined to the urban milieu - or on an international base - if it was aimed at war zones where legal trade had been suspended. In the end, the author examines the case study of Marcel Seytres, an important arms trader and smuggler based in Marseille.
