The contemporary world is segmented in a large variety of sexual subcultures. There are extensive geographical variations in the ways in which sexual life is perceived, practices and experienced. The existence of cultural and social differences in sexual expressions - be they real or imagined, feared or desired - is a key element of the discourses that sustain ethno-cultural boundaries. The paper analyzes the various ways "some intuitive, some less so - in which the social sciences have explored the role of the erotic dimension of geographical mobility. The starting point of the essay is the growth, in recent years, in the number of studies dealing with various forms of sexual change connected to migration. Such growth, however, has not (yet?) triggered the development of consistent analytical frames and cumulative research programs. The paper argues that any further development will require a heightened capacity to differentiate among research questions and perspectives.
Keywords: lovescape; sexual subcultures; sexual migration; sexuality; sexual change; ethno-cultural boundaries.
