The Argentinian military dictatorship, which was established in 1976, benefitted in its early years from considerable societal support or, at least, from high levels of passive acceptance. Together with the development of State Terrorism, this meant that the organisation of different social actors into an effective opposition was hampered. This article, which makes use of sources in the North American and Argentinian archives, analyses the role of the myth of General Videla’s moderation and the extent to which it helped to legitimise the military government.
