The review examines the book Cittadinanze incompiute. La parabola dell’autorizzazione maritale, edited by Stefania Bartoloni. Cittadinanze incompiute examines the roots of the laws which, for a long period in Italy and Europe, sanctioned the legal incapacity of women. It then discusses the long-term developments of the Sacchi Law (n. 1176/1919), which abrogated the institution of marital authorisation and allowed, with albeit significant limitations, women to take on public roles and exercise a profession.
