This work analyses the transformations of the monumental landscape in the Italo-Slovene borderland and in the Northern Adriatic in general. Taking as a case study the construction of the statue of Gabriele D’Annunzio in Trieste in the summer of 2019, it shows the impact of its commemorative practices and its political implications. The essay is based on new material from several archives and it connects the function of D’Annunzio and of his march on Fiume (Rijeka) with the postwar political violence. In particular, it studies its impact on the cultures of memory in a borderland context. It demonstrates the interconnection between postwar violence and memory politics and it shows that the memorialization of D’Annunzio is part of a mosaic of initiatives, aimed at construct a border landscape which sustains a selective historical narrative.
