The Conference of Italian University Rectors (Crui) was one of the major actors in the academic world during the 1960s. Chancellors were able to have the highest degree of influence on Italian university politics, especially through their relationship with politicians and institutions. Not only were they full professors, but also prominent figures in their respective fields, often involved in central administration. The Chancellors’ decision to create a coordinating association allowed them to gain an even greater power. The author explains the development of this body in its first stages. Then, he analyses how the Crui faced the transformations of the academic system in the 1960s. Last but not least, he studies their relationship with the other members of the academic world. Since a collection of Crui papers does not exist, the study is based on the archives of a few universities and on the private papers of former minister of Public Education Luigi Gui and those of Tristano Codignola, former Socialist party responsible for educational affairs.
