This article aims to analyze various arguments and commonplaces regarding the first antifascist Association/Militia, the “Arditi del Popolo” (Adp), that have appeared routinely in historiography and conferences on the topic up to, and including, those organized in the Spring-Summer 2021 to commemorate the first centenary of the Association. The article focuses first on the connections in general between veterans of the Italian Shock Troops in WW1 (the “Arditi”) and the “early hour” fascists, namely, the “Sansepolcristi” and the “Squadristi.” It then turns to examine alleged ambiguities of the Arditi del Popolo, their relationship with other war-veteran movements and associations, including those connected to D’Annunzio and “Fiumanesimo”, as well as their links with the political cultures of the workers’ movement. Other relevant issues touched upon in the article are the relations between the Adp and the Italian State, the attitude of left-wing parties and workers’ unions towards the Adp, its spread in Italy and, finally, the typological classification of its antifascist stance.
Keywords: Reducism, Syndicalism and “Nationalist left”, “early hour” Fascism, Futurism and political Dannunzianism, Italian Shock Troops and “Arditi del popolo” (The People’s Shock Troops), Anti-fascism.
