The “Antonio Marro” Colony-School was founded in Reggio Emilia in 1921. Placed under the administration of the nearby “San Lazzaro” Asylum, it was addressed to the education of children and youths – both boys and girls – with intellectual deficits, at the time often forced to live with the insane in the psychiatric hospital. The paper focuses on the elementary school teachers employed by the Colony between the 1920s and 1930s, with the aim of bringing to light their biographical profiles and, especially, their training. For this research, the author combined the study of publications on the subject with the examination of unpublished archival sources.
Keywords: “Marro” Colony, Intellectual disability, Teaching staff, Reggio Emilia, Twenties and Thirties, Twentieth century.
