Between the two World Wars, the explicit political aims of the fascist regime combined with the pervasive rhetoric for a modernization of the city promoted in Milan, according to the design of the ‘corporative city,’ a large- scale project of physical and social substitution and property valorization, with the displacement of the lower classes to the suburbs. This article outlines the characters of the process, depicting the general climate and positions of the main figures in urban planning culture. Very later, the reasons and convictions for the preservation of historic urban fabric and not only of monumental emergencies within broad processes of thinning and extensive demolition would emerge.
Keywords: Milan; fascist town planning; historic center
