This work fits into the line of studies on the relationships between politics and religion in Tocqueville’s thought, but it does so from a partly new perspective. First of all, it aims to justify the author’s inclusion within the current of religious transcendentalism. This orientation generally considers Protestantism the religion most compatible with the ethical and political categories of modernity. Not so for Tocqueville, that, even if he shares the con-ceptual framework of transcendentalism, outlines instead a deterministic correspondence be-tween democratization and renaissance of Catholicism. This research intends to offer a cri¬ti-cal reading of this seeming contradiction, which Tocqueville himself realizes, analyzing the particular interpretation that the author gives of the two Christian con¬fes¬sions, and the unavoidable simplifications implied in his philosophy of history.
