The Ragusa food supply system (annona) represents an extraordinary observatory for investigating what we can define as a “unique” history, since the special relationship established with the Ottoman Empire constitutes its key element and its qualifying characteristic. In this story, the marketplace (Platea) is not only a real place, where people buy and sell, but also the metaphor of a food needs management system which here, more than elsewhere, can help describe a different Mediterranean.

Keywords: Market, Annona, Platea, Ottomans, Ragusa, Mediterranean.
