This article presents some initial results of an International Meeting held in Venice in 2022, during which several speakers were invited to offer suggestions for the safe-guarding of the Rialto Market, focusing on its activities and on the use of public build-ings and open spaces. Drawing on their expertise, the participants were asked to con-sider the current perception of decay in the heart of the city from a comparative per-spective. Across Europe, various initiatives aimed at revitalising historic commercial places are currently underway. At the same time, this initiative must be understood within the context of a broad and multifaceted debate on the future of Venice. The conference selected several significant case studies – such as Smithfield in London, the Viktualienmarkt in Münich, the commercial districts of Brussels, Thessa-loniki, Zagreb and Ljubljana, and San Lorenzo in Florence – inviting key actors in-volved in these ongoing transformations to discuss possible approaches to rethinking the Venetian central market.
