The author examines the writing of six documents dated from 1363 to 1436, related to the monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena in Catania. He considers the graphic skill of judges, notaries and witnesses, and notes the presence of persons who sign on behalf of illiterate witnesses. A thorough study of the Latin script used in Sicily during the last centuries of the Middle Ages is desirable.
Keywords: Catania, San Nicolò l’Arena, documentation, signatures, graphic skill, Sicily in the late Middle Ages.
