Parenting is a cultural function but also a social problem. According to this assumption, parenting is the effect of the intertwining among not only knowledge and values, but also law and welfare. During the 20th century, experts suggested and recommended childrearing practices that differ a lot from each other in terms of contents and objectives. Legal culture has also changed during the last century and is now oriented to support parents in their parental responsibility. This essay presents and describes three different models (liberal model, progressive model and model of competence) deriving from the aforesaid intertwining. Finally, the essay tries to analyze the impact of the model of competence.
