Russia after two decades of transition: The state of play This article reviews some of the results of the Political Atlas of the World research project launched by the Mgimo University and the Institute for Social Planning as a comparative multi-dimensional statistical analysis to throw light on the position currently occupied by Russia, among other nations. Five complex correlated indices - state efficiency, external and internal threats, potential for international influence, quality of life and the institutional basis of democracy - are used to calculate point scores for 192 countries. The results highlight Russia’s ambiguous and contradictory position, associating its strengths and weaknesses. These results stand as a useful contribution to efforts to move beyond the simplifications and stereotypes that have become current about Russia. They also identify the problems Russia is facing and possible solutions which have not yet been properly exploited.
