This article examines the development of specifically feminist forms of materialist thinking, strating from the classical dualistic thought of Beauvoir, through to the more radical brands of bodily materialism of feminist post-structuralist theory. The autor argues that a new form of "matter-realism" has been develping more recently in feminist theory, in response to the challenges of new scientific developments in bio-genetic, neural, evolutionary and environmental sciences. This new feminist materialism points towards vitalist politics and a monistic political ontology.
