The author, after a brief historical summary of the theoretical approaches to psychotherapy research, underlines some problematic aspects of Evidence Based Medi­cine applied to analytic psychotherapy. Are also described the results of some research studies on outcome of analytic psychotherapy that demonstrate its efficacy, confirmed in follow-up studies. Some reflections are presented on the role of empirical research in the development of knowledge in psychoanalysis and analytical psychology.
